Moondive is a collaborative project, produced by VPRO television and radio of Holland (a warning to monoglots, the site is in German).  The VPRO is a non-commercial broadcasting organization that pays considerable attention to the cultural scene.  Traditionally, the VPRO is the stomping ground of producers who give full rein to their journalistic and creative autonomy.  VPRO plays a pioneering role in the field of music in particular.

Each week during June, 1999, VPRO will be producing a series of four Moondive sessions, collaborative explorations of musicians from various walks of music who would not normally play with each other.   Each session is led by a musician/composer who, along with the production team, selects the group.

Moondive #4 will be led by Joey Burns and John Convertino of the band Calexico.  We have been invited to join them and six other outstanding musicians of divergent genres.  Our temporary bandmates will be: bassist Pablo Nahar, saxophonist Roland Brunt, Mike Booth on trumpet and percussionist Ponda O'Bryan.  Mike and Roland are both in the band De Dijk.  Pablo, Roland and Mike all work in some flavor (or flavors) of jazz, while Ponda specializes in Agro Caribbean, West African, and Surinamese music.  Both he and Pablo are from Suriname, while Roland and Mike are from Amsterdam.

The eight of us will hole up in a house secluded in the Dutch countryside with a small camera crew.  We will work for four-and-a-half days to create a one hour and forty-five minute show.  Twenty minutes or more of this will be an all-new collaborative composition.  The rest will be collaborations on each other's already existing material.  At the end of our session, we will be taken back to Amsterdam to perform at the Club Paradiso.  This live concert we explode into will be live radio broadcast on Radio 3FM in Holland and globally via the Internet and filmed for television.  The concert film will be edited with the footage of the creation process into a 45 minute show to be aired on June 27 on Dutch television VPRO.
